When driving the Rav4, I have experienced a nice little feature of it that isn't pointed out much: its smooth handling. The SUV doesn't feel like the usual truck; it drives more like a car. That's because with the 4-cylinder, you're not dealing with as much weight or power. Timing chains were first introduced in replacement of timing gears which provided a longer life and were almost indestructible. Unfortunately, the use of timing chains has become less common and most modern engines use a rubber timing belt. This is due to the fact that it's quieter than a chain, less complex to produce a tensioning system, and because the life expectancy of a timing belt is about the same or slightly less than the average vehicle ownership, thus creating aftermarket replacement demand.
4.1. Robust Construction
Robust construction in an engine is one, if not the most vital thing to look for when determining lifespan and the ability to maintain performance. It also happens to be one of the hardest things to identify. The term "robust," which refers to the ability to withstand wear, pressure, or damage, is very suitable for the 2AZ-FE engine. The block is constructed from a very strong but lightweight aluminum alloy, which contains a cast iron lining to increase durability. It is essentially a high-tech composite material with good formability. High-strength bolts are used in many areas of the engine to increase strength and prevent movement. An FRM (Fiber Reinforced Metal) material is used for the cylinder walls, which has outstanding strength and wear resistance. It also helps to make the engine lighter. This material and the construction of the walls are particularly suited to reducing the chances of bore wear. Finally, the crankshaft, which is the heart of any engine, is made from high-quality steel and has a fillet rolled construction to increase strength and durability. This provides a very strong history for the 2AZ-FE engine. In practical terms, it means that engine components are far less likely to succumb to wear, which in turn dramatically increases lifespan.
4.2. Low Maintenance Requirements
